Brian McCabe honored for Distinguished Service

On March 5, Brian McCabe, a professor in the Human Services and Chemical Dependency Counseling Department, received a Distinguished Service Award from the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. The award was presented by Commissioner Arlene Gonzalez Sanchez.

The award recognizes Brian for dedicating his professional career as a social worker and educator to improving the lives of New Yorkers by promoting the knowledge, skills and competency of chemical dependency counselors.  The commissioner noted that Brian’s contributions elevated HVCC as a leader in New York State’s network of community colleges that offer chemical dependency counselor programs and underscored the importance of a counselor career ladder which recognizes the value of an associate’s degree as an important step in a counselor’s professional growth.

Brian’s participation in a multitude of statewide committees and work groups have augmented New York State’s efforts to redefine the addictions profession as a “profession of choice.”

The commissioner extended her best wishes to Brian as he retires at the end of this academic year with 35 years of service.
